All forms of plastic surgery are gaining in popularity, liposuction is no exception. The main danger of liposuction as with any cosmetic procedure is not doing your homework about what the dangers of the surgery are. The American Society of Plastic Surgery did a survey released in March that states “Although 8 out of 10 cosmetic plastic surgery patients are satisfied with their surgical experience, nearly 40 percent believe they should have been more proactive in learning about potential side effects and complications before the surgery.”

Liposuction was first used to correct small irregularities of the patient’s body. It is now used in different areas of the body from the knees all the way up to the neck. It is now considered a major procedure and the prospective patient should treat it that way. While reported complications and risks have been exaggerated by some in the media, the danger of liposuction is real.

What are the dangers and what can I do about them?

The first thing that you need to understand is that there are a range of complications and dangers that are a result of this surgery. Typically a surgeon will categorize the dangers as mild, moderate or severe. While a mild danger of liposuction is not life threatening, it could still result in permanent complications or side effects.

Mild dangers of liposuction are usually seen immediately after the surgery. Even if you have picked the best board-certified surgeon, loose, excess skin can be the result of the operation due to the large amounts of fat removed at once. This of course depends on how much fat you are having removed and where, so the effect will vary. This will also depend on individual patient’s skin elasticity. Excess skin can be removed by other surgeries. A good example of that would be a tummy tuck.

Scars can be caused by the incisions made from the liposuction procedure. These scars can be permanent though you can help them fade with the use of certain creams.

The moderate dangers of liposuction can last for several weeks or months. These include swelling and infection. If you are having ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty burns could occur. The swelling can cause pressure on the nerves that can result in numbness. Antibiotics are recommended when you get infections after the procedure. Symptoms of infection include redness, tenderness, fever, chills and vomiting.

As we move into the severe dangers of liposuction please note that these rarely occur. It is better to be aware of any danger of liposuction though. These dangerous results include:

 

  • organ damage from injury
  • pulmonary embolism
  • fluid imbalance
  • lidocaine overdose
  • liposuction deaths

 

Organ damage can occur if the surgeon accidentally punctures the patient’s internal organs. This could damage the organs and result infection. The only remedy for this is surgery to repair the damage. Pulmonary embolism can be caused by displaced pieces of fat that may then travel to the lungs. This would cause the patient difficulty breathing which could send you to the emergency room. Lidocaine overdoses and fluid imbalances can cause serious complications that can lead to death.

The best remedy to avoid these dangers is to be well informed. Do your research regarding the doctors that are going to be involved in your surgery. Investigate the specifics of the type of liposuction you are having. Don’t be a victim of the greatest danger of liposuction – ignorance.

A Magician’s Guide to Judging Magic Tricks

If you occasionally buy close-up magic tricks or street magic for your own amusement or even if you are a professional magician, then here are some factors to consider before making your next purchase.

Degree of difficulty – A high degree of difficulty means that you need some foundational skills with magic, and most likely knowledge and skills in sleight-of-hand techniques. Most importantly, high difficulty tricks will require lots of practice before you attempt to do the trick in front of a live audience. Lots of practice means days and days of practice, not just a few run throughs. There are some tricks that have such a high degree of difficulty that you may never master them. Keep that in mind so that your expectations and frustration levels are managed.

Angles- When magicians speak of angles, they are referring to where the spectators must be located when you perform your trick so that the trick is not revealed. If everyone must be directly in front of you, then angles are very critical, and your ability to control the spectators become an important part of the trick. If the trick can be done while you are literally surrounded by people, then that probably means no sleight of hand or gimmicks are necessary to do the trick. For the beginning or intermediate magician, it’s best to have tricks where angles are not critical, or where wide angles are possible.

Being Left Clean – All magicians like tricks that once performed, the object of the trick can be inspected by spectators with no possible discovery of how the trick is performed, and the magician is not left with any gimmicks in his hand to dispose of. That is what is meant by being “left clean”.

Gimmicks – The majority of close-up magic tricks require no gimmicks to make the trick work. If a gimmick is required, it should be easy to dispose of it before the trick is finished. Gimmicks increase the cost of magic tricks and sometimes increase the degree of difficulty.

Set-up and Reset – There are some tricks that have fairly complicated set-ups that must be completed before a magic trick can be performed. If it is an excellent trick that will totally amaze your spectators, then it might be worth it. Usually lengthy set-ups mean that in order to do the trick again, the reset time will also be lengthy. There is a big problem with tricks like this, regardless how amazing they may seem, is that you can’t carry them around with you very easily. Impromptu tricks are sometimes the best, and complicated set-ups preclude any hope of it being an impromptu trick.

Pay Off or Effect – If a magic trick has a complicated or lengthy set-up and only produces a “that’s an interesting trick” comment, then it has a low payoff and is simply not worth the effort. Similarly there are a lot of great card tricks that have long story lines or extended card handling routines that have low payoffs and low “wow” factors that make them not worth the effort to get to the punch line such as “Now the four jacks came back together again.”

Costs – The average online cost for good magic trick will run somewhere between $10 and $50. Look for tricks with video instructions that can be downloaded immediately because they are usually cheaper than DVDs. However, there are several advantages to purchasing DVDs. They are not only permanent in the event your hard drive fails, but they can also be resold on eBay or other sites to allow you to recover some of your learning expense.

Just keep in mind that if you absolutely love a trick, and even though it is difficult and has a complicated setup, go for it anyway. Your motivation will drive you to practice and learn the trick. Besides, there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing the secret of a good trick.

Momus – Greek God

Inspired by the god, the “Knights of Momus” (“KOM”) was the name of a Mardi Gras society in Galveston, Texas, founded in 1871. The original Knights of Momus went defunct around the time of World War II. A new group was founded in the mid-1980s, and seeking to rekindle the spirit of the original group, adopted the Momus name.

“The Knights of Momus” is also the name of the third-oldest New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe, founded in 1872. Unlike the Galveston Momus organization, the New Orleans iteration of the Knights of Momus has operated continuously since its founding, and remains true to its roots as a secret society.

For over 100 years, the Momus parade was a fixture of the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade schedule, parading annually on the Thursday before Fat Tuesday. Since Momus was the Greek god of mockery, the themes of Momus parades typically paid homage to the organization’s namesake with irreverent humor and biting satire. The 1877 parade theme, “Hades, A Dream of Momus,” caused an uproar when it took aim at the Reconstruction government established in New Orleans after the Civil War. Attempts at retribution by local authorities were largely unsuccessful due to the secrecy of the membership.

In 1991, the New Orleans City Council passed an ordinance that required social organizations, including Mardi Gras Krewes, to certify publicly that they did not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, in order to obtain parade permits and other public licensure. In effect, the ordinance required these, and other, private social groups to abandon their traditional code of secrecy and identify their members for the city’s Human Relations Commission. Momus was one of three historic krewes (with Comus of 1857 and Proteus of 1882) that withdrew from parading rather than identify their membership.

Two federal courts later declared that the ordinance was an unconstitutional infringement on First Amendment rights of free association, and an unwarranted intrusion on the privacy of the groups subject to the ordinance. The Supreme Court refused to hear the city’s appeal from this decision. Nevertheless, the Momus parade never returned to the streets of New Orleans, although the group still conducts an annual bal masqué on the Thursday before Mardi Gras.

They can easily communicate and make connections. Formal or informal networking is just passé for them. This is not usually the case.
